drive from Wrocław. It is not only the distance that makes you think you are
still in Poland; it is also the architecture and the landscape. Buildings and
houses in Saxony look so similar to the ones in Silesia. No wonder because both
countries had the same ruler at one stage in the 17th century’s
history. It was Augustus II the Strong, who was elected the King of Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. Thanks to the election he could be a king, not only a duke;-). He
had to ‘pay’ for it with the conversion into Catholicism and building an
impressive catholic temple Hofkirche (the biggest sacral building in Saxony).

power of Poland in the war with the Russian Empire and failing to carry out
internal reforms. However, he left amazing Baroque palaces in Warsaw and
Dresden, not to mention an extremely huge and expensive collection of jewelry, art,
gemstones, sculptures, etc. Most of them can be seen in the Grünes Gewölbe
(Green Vault) – several rooms housing a breathtaking collection of very old and
precious treasures, which gave beginnings to the first and oldest museum in the
world (located in the Castle, cost: 10 euros, audioguide included, duration: it
took us about three hours). Out of so many others exhibitions displayed in Zwinger
and in the Castle it is definitely worth seeing. Of course, there is the
world-famous Sistine Madonna by Rafaello in the Old Masters’ Gallery in Zwinger,
which we did not have time to see (left for the next time, when the weather is
more suitable for museums;-).

Dresden has
many faces. Naturally the most famous one is the Old Town with many baroque buildings,
Frauenkirche, Zwinger palace and the Castle, a lot of fascinating museums and the
history of a terrible bomb damage in 1945. I could not wait to see the Old
Town, because whoever I had talked to before was mentioning it and for me,
first, seeing Dresden meant seeing the Old Town. How lucky I was that I could see also other
faces of that amazing city! The Old Town is a landmark and a must-see, of
course, and I especially recommend looking at it from the Augustus Bridge – it
forms an amazing skyline, but all in all I was a little disappointed that it is
not bigger and that it is quite black (the buildings are made of sandstone,
which is very difficult to clean).
One could spend the whole day strolling only around Neustadt, exploring every
nook and cranny of that sometimes very surreal, but very welcoming, place. The new town has also its old Martin-Luther
church located in a calm square and surrounded by beautiful old houses. What is
also worth mentioning is the amazing cinema that looks like from the 1920’s

It will be
ten years this May since we moved over here to live in the most special place
in Wrocław called Leśnica (the western outskirts of the city, in German Deutsch Lissa). A lot has changed since then and how I
wish now I had been taking many more photos of the place which I adore so much
and which has become my little motherland. You pass the same streets and paths
everyday and just take it for granted that they will always look like that. You
don not even know when, suddenly, new buildings appear and the green remote
fields and meadows vanish into oblivion, old buildings are pulled down or get
renovated and,all of a sudden, you are not able to remember what they looked like
before. They are just inside you, you can feel them and the general atmosphere, but if
you want to share the feelings it would be much easier to have some more concrete sources. Again, you
realize that everything is so fleeting…
When we
moved here in 2002 from a posh district in the south of Wrocław, the people either
did not know where Leśnica was or they could not believe that we had changed
living in one of the most luxurious districts into going to such a remote,
unknown and neglected area. To get to
our place you need to walk about 1km from the main bus and tram terminus or take a bus, if you are lucky, because
it runs very rarely. At the beginning, it only added to the attraction of living
here, because on both sides of our street there was nothing, but green fields, meadows,
bushes, woods and some half-legal allotments. It was like entering a completely
new world – after the hustle and bustle of the busy Wrocław, in Leśnica, when
you passed the main Średzka street, you suddenly entered the slow-paced realm
of silence and greenery, an avenue of beautiful old linden trees. Besides, to get to our
street first you have to go past the stunning and recently renovated castle and
a beautiful park – very quiet and relaxing as not too many people appear there
(those from the city do not know about it or it is too far for them and the
locals probably have not enough time or do not see anything special
there).

explore the Kirschberg (cherry mountain) aka Goering’s Park and search for the
remnants of the amazing pre-war mansion of Frau Breugmann – the owner of shoe

huge gardens, fountains and pools in the past, nowadays almost completely

I know that
the blog should be about Wroclaw. But it is also about travelling and learning
about other cultures, so I would like to share with you some information about my
trip to India in April 2010. I was lucky enough to get invited to visit some
Indian schools and, amongst others, a school run for the tribal kids in Muvalia district of Dahod city in the state of Gujarat. It was a lifetime and life-changing
experience. There is also a boarding
hostel, so that these poor kids, very often orphans, can be provided education,
no matter how far from the school they live. I saw these extremely poor and
basic living conditions of the kids in the hostel and the studying rooms, where
they didn’t even have the minimum of ‘fresh’ air, i.e. not even the smallest under-ceiling fan.
But the most striking thing is that the kids do not demand anything more, they
have never seen a toy in their life, yet it is enough to make them happy just
smiling to them, waving hello, shaking hands and making a photo together. They
prepared such amazing artistic and dance performances for us!
The school and
the hostel are run by Christian missionaries and lots of people of good will,
who do a lot of hard social and educational work for the tribal people. They
continuously struggle with the lack of drinking water and food and expenses for
basic things. I was crying when I saw all this and immediately wanted to help
the Indian children. I am not too big a fan of soft toys, but when I realized that
the kids there had never played with anything like that and they had never seen a
toy in their life I immediately came up with an irrational idea of sending them
some soft toys (400!). It was a silly idea or rather a cry od despair, but it shows
how much I got influenced by what I had seen and felt there and how much I wanted to help them, though, ironically
enough, the kids were safe, smilling and looking happy. Yet, I was immensly struck and heart-broken by
the extremely basic conditions they live in, and then, after talking with the
headmaster of the school and the hostel, by the continuous struggle to keep the
hostel running. In 1998 they started a boarding for the tribal children who
have no facilities to go the school near their homes. The tribal people of this
area have been systematically exploited by the dominant caste people and the
charitable trust, which established the mission, are making efforts to liberate
them from their clutches. The trust’s major interest is in the upcoming of the
poor and marginalized tribal people of the surrounding areas. Their prime
concern and the focus is on the education of tribal children which will
definitely bring changes in their life as they grow. To provide quality education
today they have a residential self-financing Gujarati medium primary School
(1-7 classes) with 490 boys and girls. The students of the school live in the
boarding hostels. They have also successfully established a social work department
called Tribal Social Welfare Society. It runs developmental and women
empowerment-related projects which take place in more than 40 villages. Yet, vast majority of
the area of Dahod district remains untouched.

love and affection. Children are given ample opportunities to develop and to
enhance their skills and talents through dancing, singing, rangoli making,
public speaking competitions, playing various games and musical instruments. Knowledge

by conducting quiz-competitions. The children are given nutritious food in

biggest industrial company of Wroclaw with the size of 70 hectares and at its

the aim was to motivate to even harder work. Many communist VIPs, heads of the

men who risked their life in the name of free motherland. After introducing the
martial law very hard times came, loads of people were arrested, persecuted and
made redundant and the money was used for helping them and their families get
by. It was also used for organizing Solidarity Radio and underground press.

Christmas,
Christmas and it’s already after Christmas – that’s what we say in Polish when these
long- awaited holidays finish. I hope you had a wonderful time. What makes it
so nice is undoubtedly the special yummy food we eat during Christmas. To
prolong the festive atmosphere let me recall the delicious food we ate during
Christmas Eve Supper in my family. Most
of the stuff is eaten only once a year – just on that special evening. The absolute hit and the first thing to
indulge in is the beetroot soup eaten with little mushroom dumplings called ‘little
ears’. It can be replaced by a mushroom or fish soup. Then the second course is served – in my home
it is fried carp with mushrooms, pierogi (special Polish dumplings) with
cabbage and mushroom filling, cabbage with mushrooms, herbs and spices boiled
for a few days and boiled cabbage with peas. The other things include all sorts of fish – usually herring
prepared in different ways - under the ‘duvet’ of grated apples, onion and cream, marinated one,
with walnuts and prunes or fried fish
with vegetables called Fish a la Greek (!).
There is also a tartar sauce and grated cold beetroot, usually prepared
with horseradish. If we add a special
compote made of smoked dried fruit there will be 12 obligatory dishes. 12 like
12 months of the year or 12 days of Christmas;-). For dessert you can choose
from pasta with poppy seeds and walnuts, poppy-seed cake, various types of gingerbread
and nicely-decorated cookies. One very important traditional Christmas Eve dish
in Poland is sweet kutia - boiled wheat with poppy seeds and honey , which,
shame to say, I have only eaten once or twice in my life. The dishes differ a little depending on the
region of the country, but main principles are observed everywhere – no meat on
that day and a lot of fish, cabbage, poppy seeds and gingerbread.

started in 1337, the city was second biggest after Prague flourishing politically
and economically thanks to many municipal privileges and taxes. The building of
the Town Hall was growing and the market square was full of all kinds of stalls
with products to buy. Salt was traded on a separate square, whose name ‘Solny’
still reminds us of those times. One of
the main industries was beer production - visit the famous historical Świdnicka Cellar (Piwnica Świdnicka) in the Town Hall
and enjoy the funny scene engraved above the entrance. If you are already there, look up and find the 15th-century
friezes on the Town Hall’s walls depicting various entertainments of Wroclaw medieval
citizens. New churches, buildings and schools appeared. It was the “Golden Age’
of Wroclaw. No wonder that the Czech football
team will probably choose Wroclaw for their stay during EURO 2012 and Vaclav Klaus can feel at home here;-).

Last Thursday I had a wonderful opportunity to see the premiere of the Brave Kids clip made during their last artistic workshops at the Brave Festival in Wroclaw in summer. Though the film lasted only six minutes it aroused big emotions (we watched it three times altogether;-).These kids come from different corners of the world affected by wars, poverty, homelessness and natural disasters. Here they have a chance to forget about their problems sharing their artistic talents and cultures, which are usually so much different from their peers' ones. It's such an excellent project!!! The kids learn how to be tolerant and open towards each other without losing their own identity, they build love and peace in the world and have a lot of fun while doing so! Thank you the organisers of the Brave Festival and Brave Kids for doing such good work!!!!
Wroclaw is proud of its St. Nicolas Street, which was very important in Middle Ages, when the city was growing. It led from the Town Square to the western city gate – the Nicolas Gate. The gate doesn’t exist anymore, the city has moved its western borders far far away, but who knows, maybe you’ll meet St. Nicolas strolling there today, smiling joyfully and giving away small presents? After all, it’s his nameday today!
